This is not a major baseball blog.
I'm not an insider. I'm not avant garde. I know folks like that - I've been lucky enough (or cursed enough, considering how they schooled me) to end up in some Scoresheet leagues with some legit bloggers and authors (oh, and by the by, if you haven't bought Lee Panas' Beyond Batting Average you really ought to).
But I love baseball.
And I want to occasionally talk about. And the question is... where to do this talking? I'm a Pastor -- I'm not preaching on baseball (not quite that crazy of a fan) and my Theological Blog: Confessional Gadfly isn't quite the right place... so let's make something new.
But why a blog? I mean, why another, why write something if it's not going to be a going concern?
Because I'm re-reading Moneyball right now.
I have a romantic fondness for Moneyball more than most -- I lived in Palo Alto for a year from 2002-2003. I caught the end of the Moneyball year, and I lived out there when the book came out. And it was a wonderful read. But now, when I re-read it, it's wonderful. You know these names - you know who pans out, who doesn't man out. The moves, the ideas - you can see how they play out in the long term.
We talk about baseball all the time. But baseball is so often a pastime. There is a bit of disposality about the conversations amateurs have -- they come and go.
But what if I were to just write some of them out - my thoughts, my hopes as a Cubs fan (Ha!), my "predictions"... and had them in a place where I could look at them in ten years. Where I could look and see, "Ah, so that's what actually happened to Rizzo."
So, yeah. Hopefully there will be some good insights - but I'm not trying to be insightful. Hopefully there will be some fun reflections, but I'm not trying to put John Thorne out of business. There can be fun with stats - but I'm not Rob Neyer nor am I Brian Kenny but I will put up some simple stat ideas. Who knows.
Just somewhere to talk baseball. We will see how it goes.
(and someday I'll fix the links)
